Dashboard cameras are becoming more and more popular everyday. You may have questions about the technology so we’ve put together FAQs to help answer the most common questions about dash cams and our products.  

 

What is a dash cam?

A dash cam is basically a video camera that can be installed in your car (usually to the windshield) and constantly records video (and sometimes audio) as you drive. It’s also called a dash camera, in-car camera system, car black box or car Digital Video Recorder (DVR).

 

Why use a dash cam?

Dash cameras are rising in popularity and can be used by any driver who wishes to protect themselves while the road. Dash cameras provide the driver with safety and accountability by serving as an unbiased eyewitness in case of accidents or incidents. The recorded footage gives unquestionable evidence of what occurred before, during, and after an incident, should one occur. This footage will help save massive headaches and troubles when proving innocence in a car accident, or protecting yourself against false claims and insurance fraud. Dash cams can also record randomly occurring and interesting events that happen in everyday life. Dash cameras are also a popular choice for parents of new drivers, to help monitor the driving habits of their teenage drivers.

What are some features dash cams offer?

Below are some of the features you may find in the dash cams among today's market.

Loop Recording - This is a feature that is found in nearly every dash cam. This allows the dash cam to continue to record when it has used up all memory card space by overwriting the memory card from the beginning. This allows the dash cam to record without any maintenance from the user, unless there is an incident that needs to be saved. 

GPS - Built in GPS or external attached GPS device that records  the location and speed of the vehicle. 

G-Sensor - In the event that an impact is received by a vehicle, the G-sensors will be triggered, and cause the dash cam to record another event video. This is particularly useful in parking mode, to record a hit an run event, or vandalism event when the car is unattended.

Dash Camera Auto Start and Stop - This is another feature found in almost all dash cams. The camera automatically records when the vehicle is turned on, and stops when the vehicle is turned off. 

Infrared Lights - This allows the camera to record exceptionally well at night, and is extremely useful for recording the internal of the vehicle. 

Time and Date Stamp - This is another feature found in most dash cams, which allows the date and time to be present on the video to as evidence. 

How do you install dash cams?

Once you’ve purchased a dash camera, you just need to insert a memory card into the dash cam, mount the dash cam to your car’s windshield (which is easy to do with suction cup mounts and adhesive mounts). Then plug the dash cam’s power cord into your car’s cigarette lighter outlet. Recording is automatic, so you just need to drive normally. Does the GT300 DVR dashcam delete files automatically from the memory card when it is full?

  1. From the camera itself, you go to the menu of the video playback mode and choose to delete the files (you can delete a specific file or delete all the files at the same time).
  2. You plug the memory card to your computer and choose to delete the files from it, OR you format the memory card.
  3. It is recommend to purchase two memory cards for this camera, so you can always use one, and when it is full, you can switch between them.

How long does the Gt300 DVR Dash Camera record for?

The approximate record time is based on 720P and using a 32GB memory card:

2 minutes video is of 720P is between 160-350 megabytes
So 32,000MB / 350MB * 2 minutes = 180 Minutes approx. (3 hours), in the worst case (probably it will allow you more than 4 hours since day/night take different space).

Can the camera record videos while the screen is off?

The camera has a “Screen Saver” mode, which turns off the screen after several minutes while it still records video.
